Russell designed and built his own studio at the end of his garden in 2022, as Russia expanded its war into full scale invasion in Ukraine. He was a bit dumbstruck when partway through the excavation of the foundation he then encountered an ‘Anderson air-raid shelter’, concrete foundation remnant from WWII. Rather than fill in the bunker he has incorporated it into the concrete floor of his studio where it now serves as additional type storage.

He hopes it will not require recommissioning for its original construction purpose anytime soon, though the way of the world presently, who knows?

At weekends he makes ends meet running a small retail gallery for his work at 54 Church Lane Leytonstone, E11 1HE, London.
